Scholarships and Grants
SCHOLARSHIPS
  • Scholarships are merit-based, with high importance placed on academic performance, extracurricular activities and/or community service.  However, some merit-based scholarships also give consideration to financial need.  GPA requirements vary.
  • Many scholarships administered by The WSF are restricted to Forsyth County residents.  However, a number of advised scholarships are also available to students (especially high school seniors) in Davie, Davidson, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin counties.
  • Out-of-service area and out-of-state students attending college in Forsyth County are usually not eligible for scholarship consideration.  An exception would be North Carolina residents seeking nursing or other health care degrees from North Carolina schools.
  • Most scholarship funds are earmarked for students seeking undergraduate degrees.  A limited number provide assistance to graduate-level students.
  • Many scholarships are renewable from year to year by submission and review of grade transcripts. Other scholarships must be applied for each year.
Scholarship checks are issued jointly in the names of the student and the student's school of choice and must be presented to the Financial Aid office.
  • Scholarships do not have to be repaid.
  • The Tax Reform Act of 1986 has defined certain portions of scholarship amounts as taxable income to the recipient. Under this law, "degree" recipients are protected from taxation only on amounts expended for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required by the particular school attended. Any portion of a scholarship which is used for room, board, and other "personal" expenses is now included as income subject to federal income tax. This is to alert you to the provisions of the tax law as they currently exist and to suggest that you review your award carefully when preparing your personal tax returns.
GRANTS
  • Educational Grants consider family income, and require a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Grant checks are issued jointly in the names of the student and the student's school of choice and must be presented to the Financial Aid office.
  • Grants do not have to be repaid.
