Scholarships are merit-based, with importance placed on academic performance, extracurricular activities and/or community service. In addition, some scholarship consider family income to varying degrees. GPA requirements vary.
Educational grants consider family income, and require a minimum 2.0 GPA. Grant commitments are made for one year per application; you must apply each year for educational grants. The number of years a student may repeat an application may be limited. Maximums are set on dollars amounts offered annually and cumulatively.
Most scholarship funds are earmarked for students seeking undergraduate degrees. A limited number provide assistance to graduate-level students.
Grant and scholarship checks are issued jointly in the names of the student and the student's school of choice and are usually mailed to the student for presentation to the Financial Aid office.
Full-time enrollment is preferred, but you must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester during the academic year in any program leading to a degree, certificate, or diploma from an accredited institution which participates in the federal student aid program.
U.S. citizenship is required for most scholarships and grants, but there are some exceptions for noncitizens and "eligible noncitizens.
