MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the Foundation's 2013 Community Luncheon on Wednesday, May 1.  Winston-Salem is celebrating its Centennial this May, and as we honor the past, we will also look to the future by highlighting the changing demographics that have critically important implications for NC, the Triad, and Forsyth County.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. James H. Johnson, Jr., director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center and the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, An engaging and thought-provoking speaker, Dr. Johnson will link our community’s ability to respond to these ongoing demographic changes to our level of future competitiveness.  Don’t miss this opportunity to join a very important conversation - registration information will  be available on our Web site in March!

Forsyth Futures Releases Results of Local Food Study

AT LAST YEAR'S COMMUNITY LUNCHEON, the Foundation focused on the impact of the growing local food movement - and its positive implications for economic development, access to food, health, and social capital.  Also highlighted was a local food assessment study that was funded by a Foundation Community Grant, as well as by Forsyth Futures and Forsyth County.

On January 30, Forsyth Futures presented the results of the study, The Forsyth County Community Food System: A Foundation to Grow, to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. The goals of the study were to provide an objective assessment of the current community food system in Forsyth County and to serve as a catalyst to maximize the economic and social impact of the production and consumption of local foods. The study was conducted from May 2012 to January 2013, and study results include information on what was learned about the current system, as well as short- and long-term opportunities for community action.

The ultimate vision of the study is to have a community food system that is economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable by promoting a strong local food economy, ensuring producers and food system workers a fair and sustainable livelihood, and providing all communities with access to fresh and healthy foods.  Stay tuned for information on more positive community outcomes generated by the study!

April 1 Deadline for Most Merit Scholarships

 
DO YOU KNOW OF LOCAL STUDENTS who need help paying for college?  In 2012-2013, the Foundation provided over $1.2 million in scholarships and low-interest loans.  Most of our scholarships utilize a common online application, which simplifies the process.  Click here for more detailed scholarship information on the Foundation's Web site.  Please help us spread the word about our scholarships throughout our community!

Application deadlines:
Most merit scholarships: April 1
Financial need-based scholarships and loans: August 15



Scholarship Spotlight:
The Harry C. Morgan Scholarship (for Engineering Students)
In this e-news we are highlighting a new scholarship fund for engineering students!  Established in 2012 by David R. Morgan of Winston-Salem in memory of his father, Harry, this scholarship is for graduating high school seniors who have been accepted by an accredited school of engineering. 

As David notes, “I wanted to honor my father and his memory with this scholarship since it was his encouragement that led me to pursue engineering and eventually a business career. Although he dropped out of school in the eighth grade to support his family by working in the steel mill, my father educated himself by reading The Wall Street Journal every day. With this knowledge, he investigated and invested in quality companies."

"He was an inspiration to me, then eventually to my children and grandchildren by empowering us to always improve ourselves by education and life experiences. Most importantly, treat people better than you would like to be treated.  While growing up in rural Pennsylvania, debt was always a bad word and was to be avoided at almost all costs. Hopefully this scholarship will help those eligible students by limiting their financial debt while obtaining a quality engineering education.”

The scholarship has a June 15 deadline, and may provide $2,250 renewable awards for two students who will pursue full-time undergraduate degrees from accredited post-secondary institutions.  We look forward to announcing the scholarship’s recipients this summer!  more on the scholarship>

January Community Grants Support Local Programs

THE FOUNDATION MADE 17 COMMUNITY GRANTS in January totaling $682,070 that were awarded in the following program areas: arts and culture, community and economic development, education, environment, health, human services, and public interest:
  • Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County - $6,100 for landscaping
  • Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County - $45,000 for the director of marketing
  • Children's Museum of Winston-Salem - $20,520 to help support a development and marketing position for a third year
  • ECHO Network - $138,500.00 to foster enriching, trusting, and long-lasting relationships among diverse people
  • Family Services - $20,000 to help support the grant services manager position for a third year
  • Helen Simoneau Danse - $4,280 for an administrative assistant and a marketing position
  • Körner's Folly Foundation - $9,670 for Web site design
  • Next Step Ministries - $10,000 to support a nighttime staff position for a second year
  • Northwest Child Development Centers - $40,000 to support an education technology integration specialist for a second year
  • Old Salem Museums and Gardens - $80,000 for the capital campaign
  • SECU Family House - $25,000 to support the manager of educational services for a second year
  • War Memorial Foundation - $10,000 to help support the Carolina Field of Honor at Triad Park
  • Winston-Salem Center for Education and the Arts - $30,000 for building renovations
  • Winston-Salem State University Foundation - $100,000 to support the revitalization of Hill Hall
  • Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools - $8,000 to fund, in partnership with other community organizations, a search firm to assist with the superintendent search
  • Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools - $10,000 to participate in a statewide STEM Network
  • W-S Community Development Support Collaborative - $125,000 to help support a pool of funds to support operating costs and technical assistance for mature and emerging community development corporations

Year in Review: Highlights from the Foundation

 
THE FOUNDATION IS GRATEFUL for a very positive 2012, not only for substantial progress in many community leadership initiatives, but also in terms of the Foundation's asset growth,donations received, and grantmaking abilities. We are fortunate to live in a community in which philanthropy is alive and well despite challenging economic conditions. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to an even stronger 2013!
  • Assets
    $308.4 million at 2012 year-end, up 11.6% over 2011 and the first year to pass the $300 million asset threshold!
  • Grantmaking
    $20.2 million granted to charitable causes, over $2.1 million of which was in Community Grants to local nonprofits
  • Donations
    $29.7 million received in donations - the third highest year for donations in our 93-year history
  • Community Leadership Fund
    $166,423 was contributed in 2012, a 29% increase over 2011.  These donations support our leadership initiatives in the community.

Youth Grantmakers are Granting and Giving Back!

 
YOUTH GRANTMAKERS IN ACTION has had a busy fall and winter.  They have solicited grant applications, hosted a January grantwriting workshop, and they are now reviewing grant applications for youth-directed community-change projects.  In addition to fundraising that will add to grantmaking dollars and to their endowment, they are planning their first community service project this spring!

April Grants Announcement Event!  Youth Grantmakers in Action will host their annual Grants Announcement Celebration in April.  More details will follow!

Black Philanthropy Initiative:
BPI Announces Fifth Round of Grant Recipients

 

THE FOUNDATION'S BPI COMMITTEE recently announced four nonprofit grants of $5,000 each in its fifth year of grantmaking, this year for programs that support African-Americans in the area of financial literacy.  Congratulations to these grant recipients:

- Experiment in Self-Reliance: to sponsor an Individual Development Account (IDA) program to assist working low-income individuals in becoming financially stable.

- Family Services: to provide financial literacy workshops to families of preschoolers attending Head Start.

- United Metropolitan Ministries: to provide financial literacy training to children in an afterschool program.

- Work Family Resource Center: to provide scholarships for individuals to attend trainings on starting a family childcare business.

Over the course of the past five years, the Black Philanthropy Initiative has provided $103,500 in program grants to local nonprofits.
